Hiking Eldorado Canyon State Park | Boulder, Colorado

Hiking Eldorado Canyon State Park | Boulder, Colorado

Colorado, Dog Friendly, Hiking, United States
I'm going to admit it. Up until recently, I was totally guilty of not taking advantage of one of the coolest places to hike around Boulder. Eldorado Canyon State Park is less than 40 minutes from my door, and I drive past it at least once a week. I've climbed there, I've shot weddings there, but I'd never really hiked there. I decided that needed to change and I made it my mission to hike all three of the hiking trails at Eldorado Canyon. It's a smaller park, so I figured that the hikes would be similar but I couldn't have been more wrong. Each trail varied in elevation, scenery and the type of crowds you encounter. What they did have in common was that all were easy to access,…

The Fowler Trail | Eldorado Canyon State Park

The Fowler Trail | Eldorado Canyon State Park

Colorado, Dog Friendly, Hiking, United States
The Fowler Trail is a short, family friendly hike at Eldorado Canyon State Park. It's fairly flat, with minimum elevation gain and beautiful views of the park and foothills. You can follow the trail for up to 2 miles, 4 miles round trip, however I like to hike it for one mile, where it intersects the Goshawk Ridge Trail and turn around there, making it a quick two mile trot. This trail begins at the Rattlesnake Gulch Trailhead in Eldorado Canyon and eventually exits the park into the national forest land surrounding it. You follow the trail east and continue straight when the trail meets the Rattlesnake Gulch Trail. After climbing a short distance, you will pass the Bastille rock formation on the left. This is a popular rock climbing destination,…

Eldorado Canyon Trail | Eldorado Canyon State Park

Eldorado Canyon Trail | Eldorado Canyon State Park

Colorado, Dog Friendly, Hiking, United States
The Eldorado Canyon Trail is a 6.6 mile round trip hike in Eldorado Canyon State Park. It's the longest hike in the park and has amazing views of both the park itself and the continental divide. I would consider the Eldorado Canyon Trail to be a moderate to strenuous hike, because it gains over 1000 feet in elevation gain. Though to be honest, it's the first quarter and third quarter are steep, with rolling hills in between, so it's not as strenuous as other hikes with the same stats. Christian, Savannah Dog, and I hiked this trail on a Tuesday, after a holiday weekend. We headed out early to avoid the afternoon thunderstorms and returned back to our car just as the clouds moved in. It took us 3 hours…

Memorial Day Weekend Getaway | Moab + Rifle

Memorial Day Weekend Getaway | Moab + Rifle

Colorado, Dog Friendly, Trip Report, Utah
[caption id="attachment_474" align="alignright" width="300"] Are we there yet?[/caption] Over Memorial Day, Christian and I decided to jump into the adventure van with Savannah and just drive. We knew we'd eventually end up in Moab, but from there, we weren't sure where we'd go or what we'd do. We brought along our camping, climbing and hiking gear, prepared for most of what Colorado and Utah has to offer. It was a pretty awesome Memorial Day Weekend Getaway! We started off very early on day one, heading through the mountains traffic free. We made it as far as Utah before getting distracted. To be far, Colorado has a lot of awesome places to stop on the way, we've just stopped at many of them already. We decided to take the "scenic" route into…

Best Rainy Day Hike in Denver | Rattlesnake Gulch Trail

Best Rainy Day Hike in Denver | Rattlesnake Gulch Trail

Colorado, Dog Friendly, Hiking, United States
Weather is fickle out here in Colorado, and it doesn't always cooperate with your plans. It rarely rains, but when it does, it often pours, or hails. One moment it can be 80 and sunny and twenty minutes later it can be 60 and pouring. So, what does a hiker do when the weather isn't playing nicely? They look for a rainy day hike, of course. A few weeks ago I had a weekend all to myself and I promised Savannah Dog that I'd take her hiking. The forecast was 70 and sunny for both Saturday and Sunday, so we had big plans. Then the weekend came and mother nature delivered two days of 50 degrees and rain. After lounging around the house all day on Saturday, Savannah Dog and…

Day Trip to Shelf Road – The Gem Wall

Day Trip to Shelf Road – The Gem Wall

Colorado, Dog Friendly, Rock Climbing, United States
A few weekends ago, Christian, our friend Martha, and I headed down to Shelf Road for a day trip. While it was slightly late season, we figured if we found a shady wall we might be able to squeeze one last trip in. We decided to check out The Gem Wall, which is part of the Vault, for some 5.10-5.12 climbing. For most people, you can chase the shade and climb at Shelf Road well into May, but I usually call it quits mid April because of the wildlife. The bees and wasps at Shelf become quite plentiful as it gets warmer and I'm not sure I want to find out what a trip to a Canon City hospital is like. Anyways, it was a good call because weather was…

Best Dog Park in Denver | Chatfield State Park

Best Dog Park in Denver | Chatfield State Park

Colorado, Dog Friendly
Savannah Dog is a big fan of dog parks. She loves to run, to romp with other dogs and to jump face first into giant mud puddles. She's also a huge fan of running off leash with her people. So, it's really no surprise that after visiting the Chatfield State Park Dog Park, she's rated it as the best dog park in Denver. [caption id="attachment_230" align="alignnone" width="1000"] You can pick the $2 permit up at the front gate. It's good for one dog handler and up to three dogs.[/caption] This dog park is more than just a dog park, it's a fenced in dog trail that offers paved and dirt paths, big ponds, mud puddles, trees, bushes, flowers and pretty much everything and anything a dog loves. It's well maintained and…

Equestrian Trail | Chatfield State Park

Colorado, Dog Friendly, Hiking, United States
[caption id="attachment_214" align="alignnone" width="1000"] We entered the park from the east and got to see a lot of the park on the way to the trail.[/caption] The Equestrian Trail is an unpaved, 3.2 mile round trip hike at Chatfield State Park in Littleton, Colorado. The trail itself is relatively flat, with only 95 feet of elevation gain. It has sweeping views of the park itself and the Indian Peak Mountains, and is open to hikers, bikers and horses. We hiked this trail on a stormy day in early May and the views were still quite nice. There were a few bikers, but mostly foot traffic. We, sadly, didn't see any horses. The trail was relatively dry when we hiked it, but I would imagine that it becomes a mud pit quite…

Weekend Getaway | Sport Climbing at Shelf Road

Colorado, Rock Climbing, Traveling, Trip Report
A weekend getaway is sometimes just what you need to keep your weekend warrior sanity. [caption id="attachment_87" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Christian, Amber and Derek hiking into the Vault at Shelf Road[/caption] This past weekend, Christian and I jumped into the car with Savannah and headed down for a two-day weekend adventure on the Shelf Road limestone sport climbing cliffs located just outside of Canon City. We met up with two new climbing partners and spent Saturday at the Vault. We expected to find crowds of climbers and burning sunshine. Instead, we were greeted with a photogenic blanket of clouds and a crag all to ourselves. It's amazing that on a super crowded weekend, when every single campsite was taken and every single parking lot was overflowing, we were still able to find…
